Union FAQs

HOW DO I START A UNION AT MY WORKPLACE?

To begin organizing your workplace, you’ll need support from your coworkers. We ask that you collect signed Union Authorization Cards from at least 70% of your group to be safe (people can change their minds, leave, or be replaced) but legally, we only need 51% to move forward. Once enough cards are signed, we can file with the National Labor Relations Board and start the election process.

Once we win the election, we immediately begin negotiating a contract on your behalf.

CAN I FORM A UNION BY MYSELF?

No, a union is a group effort. One person can’t unionize alone. You need support from your coworkers, and the more you have, the stronger your case will be. If you’re ready to start the conversation at your workplace, we can walk you through the next steps.

DOES TEAMSTERS LOCAL 325 HELP PEOPLE FIND UNION JOBS?

Yes, but only in specific cases. While our main role is helping current employees organize their workplace

There are a few ways individuals can become Teamster members:

  • If you’re an owner-operator dump truck driver, you can sign up directly by visiting the union hall and filling out an Owner-Operator Agreement. You’ll need to own or lease your own truck.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF JOINING A UNION?

Being part of a union means having a voice on the job and someone in your corner. Members gain the ability to negotiate for better wages, job protections, benefits, and working conditions. You also have legal support and representation if a workplace issue comes up, all backed by a legally binding union contract.

WHAT ARE UNION DUES, AND WHAT DO THEY COVER?

Union dues are monthly contributions that keep the union running. They help fund contract negotiations, legal support, organizing new groups of workers, and day-to-day operations. Dues ensure you have strong representation and the resources to protect your rights and improve your working conditions.

WHAT IS A UNION CONTRACT?

A union contract – also called a collective bargaining agreement – is a legal agreement between employees and their employer. It outlines important workplace details like pay, hours, benefits, job protections, and a process for resolving disputes. Teamster members vote on every contract before it’s finalized.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO FORM A UNION?

It depends. Every workplace is different. Once we have enough signed union cards, we file for an election with the National Labor Relations Board. After a successful election, we begin negotiating your first contract right away. Some groups move quickly; others take more time. What matters most is staying organized and keeping strong support among your coworkers.

CAN MY EMPLOYER FIRE ME FOR SUPPORTING A UNION?

No. Federal law protects your right to organize. As soon as you sign a union card, your employer cannot legally fire, threaten, discipline, or retaliate against you for supporting the union. If you feel your rights are being violated, contact us immediately.

DO I HAVE TO GO ON STRIKE TO BE IN A UNION?

No. Strikes are rare and only happen if members vote for it. Most contracts are reached through negotiation – not strikes. If a strike does become necessary, it’s a decision made by the membership, not by the union alone. You’ll always have a voice in that process.
